Day 1: Arrival at Sofia International Airport, pick-up and transfer to your hotel in the foothills of Vitosha National Park.

 

Day 2: Trip to Koprivshtitsa Living Museum, a village full of colourful and charming houses, then on to the unique Starosel Thracian Temple and Hisarya for the Roman Tomb and stunning city wall remains, arriving at our hotel in Veliko Tarnovo with the possibilty of the spectacular 'Sound & Light' show.

 

Day 3: Visit to Tsaravets Imperial Palace and the Church of the Nativity in the delightful and historic village of Arbanasi. Followed by some free time to explore the city. Possibility of 'Sound & Light' show. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.

 

Day 4: Drive to the 12th Century Dryanovo Monastery with an opportunity for Batwatching in Bacho Kiro caves, then on to Etar Architectural-Ethnographic open air Museum. Then we will visit the Gold domed Russian church at Shipka before arriving in the early evening at our hotel in Burgas on the Black Sea coast.

 

Day 5: Early morning Birdwatching spectacular at Vaya Lake where we should see hundreds, maybe thousands of Pelicans, Herons, Gulls and other birds heading off to feed from their overnight roost. Then after PODA Nature Reserve, Sozopol Old Town and the fantastic Ravadinovo Castle we'll spend some time at the beach to take a dip in the Black Sea. Overnight in Burgas.

 

Day 6: Visit to Stara Zagora for the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehab and Breeding centre. A great chance to get up close and personal with many rare species destined to be released or re-released into the wild. Then to Plovdiv for a guided walk around the Roman Theatre and Stadium, the Church of Sts Konstantine and Elena, we'll also see examples of Thracian, Byzantine and Bulgarian Revival architecture. Night in Plovdiv.

 

Day 7: Trip to Bachkovo Monastery on the Chepalare River in the foothills of the Rhodopi Mountains, this 11th Century site is one of the largest and most important places of worship in the Eastern Orthodox religion. On returning to Plovdiv you will have some free time for wandering the delightful backstreets and passageways.

 

Day 8: Scenic drive through the Western Rhodopi mountains to the UNESCO World Heritage site at Rila Monastery. Then the chance to freshen up before your drop off at Sofia airport in good time for your departure.
